We have been discussing the different missions that modern universities are expected to fulfill. Professors often divide time between research and teaching, but universities may reward one activity more than the other. Some people think research should receive priority because it creates new knowledge, while others argue that teaching matters more because students are the university's primary responsibility. Should universities prioritize research or teaching when resources are limited?
I believe teaching should come first because most students attend university to learn skills and receive guidance. Research is valuable, but if professors are rewarded only for publications, classroom quality and student support can suffer.

I think research deserves strong support because it keeps universities connected to new discoveries. Students also benefit when professors bring current findings into class and involve them in meaningful research projects for undergraduates in practical ways.
